I'll Buy That for $5: Switch & Shoot
Welcome to “I’ll Buy That for $5,” in which I review games both good, bad, and truly awful that cost $5 or under. If you want to see more of these, please subscribe! If you don’t want to see more of these, I really respect that.
Let’s get this out of the way: Switch ‘N’ Shoot is cool as hell.
Right now on Switch it costs $4.59 and Steam it costs $3.99. You should buy at least one of them. You could be like me and buy both so you’ve always got Switch ‘N’ Shoot at the tips of your fingers. You’d be doing something right with your life for once.
Switch ‘N’ Shoot is an arcade bullet hell-ish type game in which you’re a - you won’t believe this part - spaceship shooting at aliens invading from space. Sort of a group of Space Invaders, if you will. Rather than stay in one area of the screen, the aliens shoot down from above, making it harder to avoid them. Death comes hot and fast, the way you like it.
Stick with me, because here’s where it gets good: The game only uses one button.
The button controls your shooting and your ship. From the start of the game, your ship automatically moves in one horizontal direction. Every time you hit the button, your spaceship switches direction and shoots a laser. This gives the game its name, Switch ‘N’ Shoot, in which you switch direction and shoot lasers as previously mentioned. Each stage involves picking up items that both upgrade the lasers and unlock an exit to the next level.
That’s the extent of the game, but it’s worth it. The music is arcade-y. The more you play, the more color options you can unlock. There are cute touches like the game giving you a fake name every run, with someone presumably at the star base telling you how likely it is you’ll die.
And it’s likely. One hit kills and you start the game over.
You should spend less than five dollars on this game right now.
