I'll Buy That for $5: KUUKIYOMI: Consider It!
You'll never actually know if you're considerate or not.
Welcome to “I’ll Buy That for $5,” in which I review games both good, bad, and truly awful that cost $5 or under. If you want to see more of these, please subscribe! If you don’t want to see more of these, I really respect that.
Hell, yeah, KUUKIYOMI: Consider It!
God I love this game.
It’s also $4.99 on both Nintendo Switch and Steam, so let’s get into it.
KUUKIYOMI: Consider It! is, one, deeply messing with autocorrect due to the exclamation point at the end of its title. Two, it’s a kind of a WarioWare-style game in which you’re supposed to do the most considerate (get it?) thing possible in a given situation. In practice, this means observing a situation and having a few seconds to guess what you’re supposed to do.
I say “guess” because the game never really tells you.
There are some obvious ones, like moving on a subway or pretending to sleep when Santa Claus shows up. But some require knowledge of Japanese culture, like standing on the correct side of the escalator to let people pass. Others could have any answer, like whether or not to move if someone on a tightly packed train falls asleep.
Some are just weirdly funny - like having to rush past two animals having sex at the zoo.
Again, the game never really tells you what the hell to do. Or even if you’re actually succeeding. Every so often you get a message assessing how considerate you are - except it’s nearly impossible to suss out exactly if you were right or not. You could be the most inconsiderate person in the world and you might not know. You probably are.
So why do I love this game in which there is no clear rubric for success or failure?
Because it’s fucking weird, man. It throws you into random - sometimes oddly embarrassing - situations and just asks you to think about what you’d do. What you do end up doing seems to matter less than the terror as you try to understand what would be the most polite in the situation. Genuinely just an insane, wild game that makes no sense.
If you like it, KUUKIYOMI: Consider It! has a couple sequels that are a bit more expensive than the original. But for $4.99, it’s worth bringing some real weird shit into your life.
The third one is $2.50 on Switch now and has a movie reference alone that is worth it. It had me cracking up!
Have you ever played "Mom Hid My Phone" or something like that? Your description reminds me of it. It's such a weird game.
