It’s Wednesday, let’s talk about game music.
I had considered starting off running with more of the classics, but since they’re classics for a reason, I thought I’d share something a little less known. Because that’s what this Substack is for. Sharing. And an endless need for attention from strangers.
Anyway, today’s video game music is the theme for Offworld Trading Company, “Red Planet Nocturne.” It’s composed by the great Christopher Tin, who is the first person to win a Grammy for a song written specifically for a video game. That’s not this one. I’m not dropping Baba Yetu on post three.
If you haven’t heard of this game, all you need to know is it’s a sci-fi strategy game that’s more focused on business than blowing things up. You caught up? Great. Because none of that matters in any way! The soundtrack is brilliant. I lack any education to describe why it’s brilliant, but there it is. Good sounds plus nice sounds equals great sounds. I don’t know what you want from me.
Still, this is such great atmospheric music for writing or working. The whole soundtrack is on Spotify and it’s one of my most-streamed albums, which, to be honest, has completely broken my music algorithms. I know I can exclude genres from recommendations but that sounds like a lot of work to fix a problem that’s my responsibility.
I hope you enjoy this one. It’s smooth. It’s awe-inspiring. It’s good sounds.
The math checks out. Great sounds!
