Happy Wednesday! We’re now less than one week away from Halloween. And since this Substack allows me to force game music upon you, I’m going to throw down some spooky stuff today. A little less commentary and a little more boo. Ugh, I hate myself for writing that sentence.
So let’s go. First up, Vampire Killer from Castlevania. Perhaps one of the most famous game themes of all time on a list I made up in my head.
Spooky. Although the version from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is quite the remix.
And then there’s Ghosts & Goblins. Or Ghouls & Ghosts. Or, my preferred game, Super Ghouls & Ghosts. The theme should be far more iconic than it is. Just a cool as hell monster game theme.
Less well known, but really effective spooky music, is the next stage in Super Ghouls and Ghosts: The Graveyard of Ships.
And where would we be as a society without Luigi’s Mansion? Wonderful haunted house music.
You want more Mario-themed haunted house music? No problem. Let’s hit that Super Mario World ghost house theme.
And we can’t forget the world of survival horror. I love Silent Hill and the opening song from the beginning of the game is creepy to this day.
And Silent Hill 2’s Theme of Laura is always mournful.
More Castlevania, you say? Fuck it, why not. This one is from Symphony of the Night.
Also a little weird to talk about video game horror without mentioning Resident Evil. So here is the creepiest, most melancholic song in the series: The save room music from Resident Evil 2.
While Final Fantasy isn’t really the scariest series, there’s always been something really spooky about the Phantom Train music from Final Fantasy 6.
And finally, something corny and ridiculous: The song Skeletons In My Closet from The 7th Guest.
Love you all and Happy Halloween! Also, if you’ve got more video game horror bangers, drop them in the comments.
